Our sensory Systems
Firstly the Sensory Wendy House, click here for more details, offered children using the creche facilities the opportunity of some personal space with sensory input. The second and larger Sensory area offered a more traditional sensory experience, helping cater for the needs of the children who attended the Conference with their families.
Karen Leggett, Conference team member and experienced standing Portage Home Visitor is a long-term friend of SensoryPlus and suggested creating a multi-sensory area in response, as always, to the expressed needs of the parents and children.
The conference serves so many purposes, offering a sense of community, an opportunity to learn more about developments in Portage Services and some much needed respite as parents descend for the entire weekend. Karen was delighted with the whole process: "The sensory area provided by SensoryPlus at the conference gave the children and families the opportunity to relax in a stimulating and safe environment. For some it was their first experience of this type of environment and the 'wow' factor was amazing, for others with more complex needs it offered a familiar experience after a very busy day. For some Portage practitioners it offered the opportunity to see how a small area could be transformed with a little imagination and core pieces of sensory equipment. The overall outcome was great for everyone."
As Karen suggests, the sensory areas proved hugely successful, allowing children to relax and express themselves in a soothing environment. SensoryPlus was delighted to be able to help, Sensory Product Manager David Payne explains; "SensoryPlus has constantly tried to prove its mettle as a genuine, sincere and caring partner to those who live and work with special needs. Sales and marketing platitudes are easy, but I hope, through the service we extend to customers every day, our subsidised Awareness Days and events like the Portage conference, we will prove SensoryPlus is truly different; we work really hard to keep our promises, and to listen."
One of SensoryPlus' most successful and famous products, the Sensory in a Suitcase was designed in collaboration with Portage over 10 years ago and continues to help families provide appropriate facilities for their children at home. Portage has purchased scores of the SIAS over that period.
In 2010, SensoryPlus will return to the National Conference to provide a similar environment for the children to use, it will differ perhaps in just one key aspect. It promises to be even better equipped than the 2009 version.
