Room for Magic at Riverwalk School

Riverwalk School in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, is a special school catering for around 120 pupils, aged form three to nineteen, with severe, profound and complex learning needs. Staff at the school work hard to enable pupils to communicate clearly and effectively by developing personal and social skills and, at the same time, encouraging them to have fun and develop their imagination. To do this the school provides a series of stimulating environments, including an existing dark room and their new sensory room, designed and installed by SensoryPlus, in which pupils can participate in small groups as well as individually, accessing a wide range of opportunities and sensory experiences in order to aid their development.

Saving Grace with a Safe Room

For many conditions where people may be at risk of injury from challenging or destructive behaviour, or a tendency to self-harm, a custom built safe space can prove invaluable. Designed as a room within a room and built of industrial strength material, combined with a thick, padded floor, they significantly reduce the danger of harm from hard surfaces such as walls and furniture.

Ifield School - Rising to the challenge

Responding to challenges is one of the most enjoyable facets of developing sensory and soft play environments. Standing in a large cavernous room at Ifield School, Gravesend, surrounded by walls painted 'battleship' grey with a ceiling arcing from standard room height up to 5m high with previous few plug sockets present, I was faced with just such a challenge.........
