Riverwalk School in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, is a special school catering for around 120 pupils, aged form three to nineteen, with severe, profound and complex learning needs. Staff at the school work hard to enable pupils to communicate clearly and effectively by developing personal and social skills and, at the same time, encouraging them to have fun and develop their imagination. To do this the school provides a series of stimulating environments, including an existing dark room and their new sensory room, designed and installed by SensoryPlus, in which pupils can participate in small groups as well as individually, accessing a wide range of opportunities and sensory experiences in order to aid their development.

An underestimated sense, smell often proves a vital component of any truly, multi-sensory experience or, equally, as a marvellous independent therapy tool.
Use as a relaxation aid, as a method for encouraging reminiscence or for enriching and enlivening learning-based activities the use of aroma can be hugely beneficial in influencing our emotional state of mind.
Aromatherapy is particularly important when a devoted room is not available for sensory work, a subtle aroma can transform a dining room into an entirely different environment for example, changing the clients perception of a room and encouraging a more receptive and relaxed frame of mind.
